Selected pieces from arts now on display

A juried art exhibition will be on display until April 15 in the Campanella Gallery after juror Larry Thomas, professor and chair of fine arts at Johnson County Community College, selected the artwork of 15 students.

Out of the 15 students selected, the following students were awarded with recognition for their work: Jocelyn Frazee, a junior graphic design and fine arts major, for her piece “Mandela”; Curtis Collins, a senior graphic design major, for his 3-D project of

“Modular Architectural Home”; and Shiloh Moreno, a junior graphic design major, for her piece “Grow.”

All participants in the exhibit were judged for ingenuity; self-expression; organization of elements within the project; and the use of materials in an exceptional or experimental way, according to Matt LaRose, associate professor of fine arts at Park.

“Having been selected or juried into an exhibition is an honor,” said LaRose. “This is an opportunity for someone, who is not their teacher, to evaluate a student’s work based upon quality and its ability to communicate.

The mention of this on a professional resume separates these students as achievers whose work is acknowledged as being better but also shows the student’s initiative in making quality work while going through the process of being judged.”

The support of the art community was on display during a reception on March 19, and the gallery was near full capacity. Onlookers progressed through the gallery, which is organized from left to right along the walls viewing the evolution of 2-D to 3-D art.

“I feel like it is a wonderful opportunity for people to have their work out there,” said Frazee. “Students should take advantage of these sorts of events that the school provides because it is not every day that you are going to have your art hung in a gallery. You could end up touching someone with your work. You really just never know unless you embrace the opportunity.”

The juried art competition is a biannual exhibit and is open to Park students who have participated in Park’s art studio classes.

The next juried exhibit will be in Spring 2017.
