PSGA continues debates on tech fee, transportation

While debating is still underway for Park University student transportation for the future, Park Student Government Association has decided to collaborate with Uber for some time on a special offer the company is offering to Park students.

Uber, which is a taxi service with an office location in the Kansas City area, will soon offer two free rides to and from campus.

This offer will be good for all Park University students, whether they are residential or commuter.

PSGA President Jeremy Barnes said an email would be sent out to all students within a week or so that will include the special offer from Uber.

“With this offer, we calculated that around 1,500 students would all be getting two free rides offered to them,” he said. “That is a really great deal.”

Another plan of business PSGA has been hard at work on includes working closely with Park University’s IT department to discuss the application of the technology fee.

Many different uses for the technology fee have been discussed, including “renovated study rooms, charging stations in high traffic areas, device rentals” and other things, according to an email that was sent out to Park students last month.

With that email was a survey for students to fill out to offer feedback on how the technology fee should be used.

According to Barnes, the total amount for the fee from all Park University students was projected to be around $400,000, but with enrollment being down this school year that amount will vary.

PSGA is also looking for a name to give to the renovated basketball court near Chesnut after its completion.

“Giving it a name gives the court an identity, so it can be put on the map in the future,” Barnes said

A ribbon cutting will be held around the beginning of November, which is the projected time slot for when the basketball court should be done.

To bring more students in the door and to get to know PSGA and its members, the organization is going to be offering free coffee and tea Friday mornings from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., during office hours.

“We want to see more students coming into the office, meeting with the members and discussing what they want to see done for Park in the future,” Barnes said.

PSGA will be starting this on October 24, the Friday after Fall Break.
