Refurbished basketball court to open soon

While Park Student Government Association’s recent project is still waiting on finishing touches, Park University students can expect to be using the newly repaired basketball court next to Chesnut Hall later in the spring semester.

Most of the construction for the basketball court was completed last semester but painting still has yet to be done.

According to PSGA President Jeremy Barnes, painting will occur once the weather warms up.

Once that is completed, a date will be set for an official ribbon cutting.

“When it’s painted it will have basketball lines and the university logo,” said Barnes.

The previous basketball underwent many renovations last fall, including being made into a full-size court, having two basketball goals put in, taller fencing, lighting around the court and more seating.

PSGA was able to follow through with this project thanks to a grant from The Sunderland Foundation in the amount of $44,000.

The total amount for the construction was placed at a bid around $63,025, with PSGA, Residence Hall Council and Pirate Fitness all working together to secure $25,000 to help pay for the renovations to the basketball court.

Barnes pushed for this project to help give students another recreation area on campus.

“I think the most important thing to remember is that the project is representative of what it means to be a student at Park,” he said. “If you have an idea or something to offer to the campus, you can make whatever impact you want to make.

“Being able to walk past the court everyday serves as a reminder that Park allows you to be who you want to be, and it’s really important to feel that you belong and matter at your institution.”

More updates on the basketball court and on future PSGA announcements and projects can be found in future issues of The Stylus or by attending PSGA meetings at 12:15 p.m. Friday afternoons in the Louise Morden Boardroom in the Mabee Underground.
