Campus renovation offers more for military students

Although the plans for a new building on the Parkville campus call it the “School of Business” building, it will actually be home to students and services outside of business. For example, it will be the future home of the Warrior Center.

The new building will be constructed near the entrance to the Parkville campus, likely taking the spot where Alumni House currently sits. It will be There are many changes currently and will be happening to Park University.  directly across the street from the historic Herr House and Thompson Commons Student Center. The Warrior Center is currently located on the first floor of Thompson Commons.

This new Warrior Center location is expected to be better, bigger and busier than it is currently.  Wade Abel, the director of Military and Veteran Student Services, explained the mission of the center.

“The Warrior Center is an organization designed to assist military and veterans student’s transition into the world of education,” he said. “We provide information and resources, such as with Veteran Affairs benefits.  We also do the benefits certifications, because we are certified officials.”

Some veterans have voiced concern regarding the new location of the Warrior Center.  Some mention that the location may be an inconvenience in distance from the rest of the Park’s campus.  Abel disagrees.

“This new Warrior Center location will have more space for all military and veterans to do what they need or want,” he said. “There will be more areas to view television and play games, use computers, have lunch and even a quiet area to study.”

Abel also added that the Warrior Center is a valuable resource for many Park University students.

“The Warrior center is more focused toward military and veteran students but is open to anyone the needs assistance.  It’s a great place to network with other students and spend some time between classes,” he said.

Nathan Marticke, associate vice president of university advancement, was also asked about the concerns around the new location of the Warrior Center, and why that location was chosen.

“I felt like it would be a good fit since more space is needed and the majority of Park’s military and veteran students are in business programs,” he said.

A program study was done with Helix Architectural Firm to help with the decision of where to relocate the Warrior Center.  Abel and Marticke were very excited to give some information about this project.

The final big question is, when will this large project take place.  Neither could give a definite answer because the project is still in a fundraising stage at this point.  Abel and Marticke did estimate that it may start in a timeframe of two years.
