Park University will join the community to celebrate the completion of the Banneker School restoration during a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at 31 W. 8th St. in Parkville. In case of rain, the event will move to the Jenkin and Barbara David Theater inside Alumni Hall on campus.
The ceremony marks the end of a 40-year effort to preserve the one-room schoolhouse, which was built in 1885 to educate African American children during segregation. The Banneker School Foundation, in partnership with Park University, has led the restoration and historical preservation work.
During the event, the foundation will dedicate the new “North Star Wall,” honoring Timothy Westcott, Ph.D., Park University professor of history and associate university archivist, for his leadership in the project. The event is free and open to the public.
