Finding heart while chasing the arts

It’s really hard to tell exactly when my passion for the arts developed. Whether it was growing up listening to classical music, going to the movies with my parents and brother so often or maybe the first time I heard the soundtrack to “The Phantom of the Opera”. I honestly don’t know when it started.

But, whatever it was that sparked that fire in me, I am thankful for it. That fire has been burning brightly ever since and only grown, especially when I moved to Kansas City to start my journey at Park.

I have always had my heart set on Kansas City as the place where I would begin my career in the arts but I was never quite certain on how much of an impact it would truly have on me.

People always think of Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago and other major cities when it comes to the arts.

But, what they may not realize is just how strong of an arts community Kansas City holds and offers to the world.

Thankfully, I have had many adventures while at Park to show me just how “artsy” Kansas City really is and I can thank Park University President David Fowler for one of those adventures.

When I told him how supportive I am of the arts and that I am working towards a career somewhere in that field after I interviewed him for a story in The Stylus, he connected me with Paul Schofer, the president and CEO of the Kauffman Center of the Performing Arts.

Aside from the excitement, slight nervousness and complete amazement at the fact I was going to be meeting with the president and CEO of my favorite performing arts venue in Kansas City, I was in shock.

I have always been taught how important it is to make connections during your college experience because you never know where those connections will take you.

But honestly, I never thought I would be networking the way I have since I came to Park and to say I have personally met with the president and CEO of the Kauffman Center is truly an amazing dream come true.

After we sat and talked about my interest in the arts, he offered to show me backstage to both of the music halls in the venue, which was absolutely breathtaking.

If you ever have a chance to attend an event at the Kauffman Center, do not hesitate and accept that opportunity immediately.

The venue is beautiful on the outside but the moment you step into Helzberg Hall or the Muriel Kauffman Theatre, your breath is instantly taken away.

As Mr. Schofer and I agreed that day, there is not a single bad seat in either music hall. Getting to see the hall of dressing rooms was quite a feat, as well as, I was completely unaware of just how many there are in that building.

But even though my meeting with Mr. Schofer was short, it was well worth the trip and I am so glad I had the opportunity to do so.

Knowing I have people at school and out in the real world who are aware of my interest of working in the arts and wanting to help me obtain my dream is truly a wonderful feeling, one that drives my passion to go on.
