I recently finished binge-watching “The Hunting Wives” to see what the hype was about. And I have come to the conclusion that it is truly worth the hype.
“The Hunting Wives” premiered on Netflix in July. Initially, when seeing people on TikTok comment about the show, it just seemed like another overly exaggerated show. But the first episode had me hooked. I haven’t binged a show like this since 2020.
Back in 2020 when COVID hit and everything was shut down, there was nothing to do. So, like everyone else, I was just binge-watching shows like “Tiger King,” “Sweet Magnolias” and “The Circle.” Binge-watching was easy then for me; now it takes a lot for me to binge a show in a week or even a weekend. But this show has done it for me.
The show revolves around a clique of housewives in Texas who all have their own secrets. You may think these could be predictable secrets a housewife would hide, like infidelity or fraud. But it goes way deeper than that. Yes, there is infidelity, but there is also murder, obsession, addiction, grooming, toxic relationships and characters hiding their sexual orientation. Every episode has a twist that leads you to want to watch the next.
But as we all know, the true test to see if a show is really worth the watch is to go on Reddit, where no one holds back. From the reviews I have seen, people have used the words “trashy” and “messy” but in the “best way” to describe the show — along with mentioning how they binged the show in just a few days. And I have to agree. This show makes you find most of the characters unlikeable. But you’re attached to seeing what happens next. This is one of the shows that you keep asking yourself, “How and why am I still watching this?”
What had made me continue watching this show was not only the twists and turns but also the characters’ personalities. Each character presents a quality that is unique to them on top of a part of them that makes you annoyed by them and their choices. And this applies to almost every character in the show.
The show is based on the 2021 novel “The Hunting Wives” by May Cobb. The storyline is based on Cobb’s experiences and observations of women who have used their connections and money as power in East Texas.
Some of the main characters you see in the show you may recognize from other shows or movies. Brittney Snow played Chloe in “Pitch Perfect.” Malin Ankerman played Tess in “27 Dresses.” And Chrissy Metz played Kate in “This Is Us.”
So, if you were like me, who had seen this show all over TikTok and on Netflix’s top ten list but still have hesitations, my advice is to just watch the first episode.
