Elizabeth Warren profile

Senator Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., has focused on ending corruption, fighting climate change, promoting equality and protecting the middle class in her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Early life

According to Warren’s website, she, “grew up on the ragged edge of the middle class in Oklahoma and became a teacher, a law professor and a U.S. senator because America invested in kids like her.”

Political experience

Warren served as an assistant to President Barack Obama and special adviser to the Secretary of the Treasury. She created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) “to protect consumers from financial tricks and traps often hidden in mortgages, credit cards, and other financial products,” according to her website. After Republican Senators blocked her nomination to be the first director of the CFPB, she became a Massachusetts senator in 2013.

Current campaign

Many of Warren’s policies focus on rebuilding the middle class, such as proposing an ultra-millionaire tax, Medicare for all, expanding Social Security, promoting safe and affordable housing and implementing universal childcare.

Warren also has plans to abolish the Electoral College and address election security, and voter suppression.

Climate change is another major focus of Warren’s campaign. She wrote Senator Ed Markey and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal resolution, which suggests a plan to switch to 100 percent clean energy by 2030. Warren has also proposed a Blue New Deal, which would work to protect oceans and waterways.

On March 5, Warren suspended her campaign after a low turnout on Super Tuesday.
