Celebrities have impact on the masses

I wasn’t a huge fan of Joan Rivers but I am saddened that she left this world so soon. I didn’t know that much about her except that she had a phenomenal upbeat personality and that she was the famed Joan Rivers.

Losing Robin Williams broke my heart. Even though I never knew him personally, I felt like I grew up with Robin. He was the great Genie and Mrs. Doubtfire and that really funny guy that made people laugh. I felt a great pain when he passed.

I think celebrities have more impact on our lives than we believe. It’s funny to think that they will always be here until one day they aren’t.

I will always remember my mother leaning over her glasses reading the newspaper watching 60 minutes saying, “Man, he got old,” referring to one of her generational celebrities. I think it may have been Mickey Rooney, and yes, he did get old.

As a teenager, I didn’t pay much attention to it and would go about whatever I was doing but now these memories are beginning to make sense.

Robin Williams was woven into the metrics of my childhood. I know he goes back into the 1970s as a great comedian. I can only wonder as I get older how the stars of today will fair as time marches on.

In 50 years, when Kim Kardashian has grandchildren, I wonder if I will have some too. That’s a scary thought.

Hulk Hogan will always be my hero even when he begins to look like Dick Clark. The sad part is when Hulk Hogan starts to look like Dick Clark, I will look like Joan Rivers.

Even as Dick Clark becomes a distant memory, I think we, as society, do mourn the loss of our celebrities regardless of generation and regardless of circumstance.

All generations were saddened by the sudden loss and suicide of Robin Williams. Suicides are tragedies. If you or if you know someone that is suffering from substance abuse or depression, contact the local Headquarters Counseling Center at 1-800-273-8255.
