Talking to media good idea for athletes to get used to

Super Bowl XILX took place this past weekend. The match up was between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots. Unfortunately I won’t be explaining the football game. Instead, I will be discussing the situation of Super Bowl media day week.

This event goes on for about four days leading up to Super Bowl Sunday. Sports reporters from all over meet in the city where the game is held and ask the players questions at the podium. Marshawn Lynch is one of the best running backs in the league. He also has the title for the worst communicator to reporters in the NFL.

Lynch has a history of going completely silent when asked a question before and after game interviews. He would be asked multiple questions and would not answer. He was recently fined last week by the NFL for $50,000. The reason is Lynch grabbed his crouch numerous times after scoring touchdowns and was warned to not do it again. Of course, he disobeyed and was fined.

At media day, Lynch addressed the press by saying, “I understand you guys have questions, but I’m only here so I won’t get fined, so I’ll be answering every question in that matter.” Sure enough, each and every question reporters asked Lynch responded, “I’m here so I won’t get fined.” His answer did not fit with any question asked but he constantly repeated it.

The next day at media day, he responded to each question by saying, “You know why I’m here.” Do they really know? I mean they’re only doing their job.

It makes the reporters look really dumb when they continuously ask questions regarding football and they can’t get a proper voice for their story. On the next day, Lynch approached the media by giving shout outs when being asked a question.

He shouted out to Africa, Oakland and his family. Mind you, none of his responces fit the questions asked. Honestly, I don’t see anything wrong with not wanting to talk to the media because everyone doesn’t have that desire to talk to them. But, he is going about it the wrong way. It is responsible for players to answer questions. I’m sure it’s in the contract in tiny print that’s never read.

If I was in his position, I would go about answering questions in a more professional matter. I would think about the future. You’re branding your name with everything you do. After football, you can get a job within the sport. No one wants to hire anyone that has a bad reputation.

Lynch could have so many opportunities outside of football when it’s done if he chooses to act more professional. Maybe he doesn’t care about any of that after football which is fine and everyone has their own path. But, I found it quite hilarious.
