Beating boredom and staying productive during quarantine

With the COVID-19 pandemic causing many to have to stay at home to fulfill government orders, isolation and boredom have set in. After a month or more of quarantine, the list of activities to do has begun to run out.

To help with this, here are some ideas of things to do that can hopefully pass the time, but also be productive and make you feel accomplished.

Pick one area of your house to reorganize

In almost everyone’s home, there is an area full of clutter and chaos. This new free time can be beneficial as it now provides time to clean up and get organized.

Starting small is probably ideal; a couple of cabinets or a closet. Doing these first can give you a feel of how long it will take and how you are trying to organize your space.

To help with this process, there are many places that sell organizational items. Walmart has many great organizational pieces from plastic tote boxes to drawers and carts. The best part is you can get items delivered, meaning you won’t have to leave your house.

Focus on your mental health

Taking a deep breath is something that should always be prioritized, especially in a time like this. More than ever, being mindful about physical health and mental health is of the upmost importance.

To check on your mental health, I recommend sitting in a quiet room with a note pad and writing down everything you are feeling. Whether its anxiety, stress, or depression, this acts like an assessment of where you are currently.

Then, it is time to take steps to heal. Make sure you are doing activities that are helpful and healthy to your mind. Painting, reading, going on a bike ride (away from others), listening to your favorite music, reading a devotional, or reaching out to people you haven’t talked to in a while are all calming and soothing activities to do.

If you are feeling mentally stressed and overwhelmed, reach out to a psychiatrist or therapist. eCounseling.com features of list of some of the top rated therapist sites that are beneficial to its users.

However, if you are feeling extremely panicked or have thoughts of suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

Cook something new

This is the perfect time to try a new dish that may be on your list. Time and lack of activities is abundant right now, so this is a good activity to try.

Also, if the dish winds up being delicious, you can add it to your repertoire: a win-win. If not, you killed a bunch of time and gained the satisfaction of trying something new.

Tasty, an online food and cooking site, provides recipes with accompanying videos to show you step-by-step how to make a dish. They feature everything from simple desserts to full meals.

Certain groceries can be hard to come by nowadays, so try to pick something you know will be in stock at your local grocery store. To help with this, go online and see what they have before you arrive at the store. You don’t want to waste a trip and possible contamination from being out in public.

Gain perspective

In times like these, it can be hard to see the silver lining with all the anxiety around. To help combat this, try to focus on what is positive. Make a list of everything you are thankful for even in this time of COVID-19; the list might be longer than you think.

Taking the time to make a list of things you are grateful for, despite being in quarantine, is a very powerful thing. Realizing there are still good aspects in the midst of tragedy can be very calming and humbling.

It makes you realize that no matter what happens in life, there will always be something or somethings to get you through it.

Try learning a new language

This is a good opportunity to learn the language you’ve always wanted to, or brush up on the skills you already have. It is the perfect indoor activity that can be done from the comfort of your bed.

Learning a new language can also keep your brain engaged by learning and retaining new information.

Free, online sites like Duolingo make learning a new language simple and easy. They have speaking, oral, and written activities to go through and levels to complete. It tracks your progress and helps you build and strengthen your knowledge of the language.

It is also an application you can download on your phone, making it accessible anywhere.

With whatever you do, make sure to practice healthy and safe habits to prevent getting the virus or spreading it to someone else.
