“Cultivating lifelong friendships through philanthropy, scholarship, sisterhood and empowering women,” is how Park University Gamma Chi Pi members describe their sorority. The group was founded last fall by Mikayla Pham, a freshman biology/pre-medicine major, and their philanthropic purpose is dedicated to Together We Rise, a nonprofit supporting foster children.

During her tour at Park University, Pham fell in love with the college, but in her opinion, Park was missing a Greek life.

“I have always wanted to join a sorority since I found out what it was,” she said. “I talked to some of the faculty at Park, and they told me I could bring it to our school.”

At the meetings, they discuss events, planning and share any concerns they might have in that moment. Also, one of the purposes of the organization is to get women out of their comfort zone to meet different people they may have never known without the club.

For Victoria Starke, a freshman interior design major, the group is great, and the members have fun together.

“Finding people with the same interests makes college more fun,” Starke said.

A big event is coming soon for the group. Its “Rush Week” will take place by the end of March and the members will have a series of activities together. There will be sisterhood days, philanthropy days and bid day. During the philanthropy day, the sorority will make fleece blankets to give to Together We Rise.

“Girls who want to be a part of the sorority have to participate,” Starke said. “It is like the initiation progress.”

Park Gamma Chi Pi members are planning more events until the end of the semester. A fundraising event and a puppy play time are being discussed by the club.
